Fats, Oil and Grease
Description:
Fats, oils, and grease includes used cooking oil.
Options & Restrictions:
Residents may dispose fats, oil and grease from food in their garbage can. Used cooking oil can be recycled into biodiesel. Some cities do pickup used cooking oil in proper sealed containers with curbside recycling while others require scheduling special item collection - check with your city or recycling hauler.
If disposing of large quantities of liquid fat, oil or grease from residential sources (i.e., deep-fat turkey fryers), it must be solidified by mixing with an absorbent material, such as cat litter or sawdust, so it doesn’t leak while being transported for disposal. In-sink garbage disposals should only be used for certain types of food waste and liquids from food preparation. Learn more about keeping fats, oils and grease out of the garbage disposal and sewer system. If you're going to use a garbage disposal, take the time to learn more about how to conserve water.
Large amounts of commercially generated fats, oil and grease should be taken to rendering businesses or energy recovery facilities for processing. If your material is not suitable for processing, it may be disposed at King County’s Cedar Hills Regional Landfill with an approved waste clearance decision.
