Paint that has a latex binder and can be removed with water while it is wet. Latex paint is also known as water-based paint.

Options & Restrictions:

PaintCare operates 150 drop-off sites throughout the state where the public can take unwanted paint for recycling for free, including from households, businesses, and government agencies. Accepts house paint and primers (latex or oil-based), stains, deck and concrete sealers, clear finishes (e.g., varnishes, shellac); must be in containers that are no larger than 5 gallons in size; must be in their original container with original manufacturer label and secure lid. PaintCare does not accept spray paint (aerosols) or anything in containers larger than 5 gallons, nor open or leaking cans. 

Latex paint is NOT accepted in liquid form at King County transfer stations or hazardous waste facilities. Latex paint can be disposed by drying it to solid form using kitty litter or paint hardener prior to disposal – watch a video on how to harden latex paint.

Oil-based & Alkyd-based paints and Paint thinner & solvents are not accepted at King County transfer stations, even in household quantities. Residents may dispose of these materials at household hazardous waste facilities. Businesses must dispose of oil-based paint through licensed hazardous waste management firms.
