Statement:

I ask for your vote.  If you live in Beacon Hill, Chinatown-ID, Columbia City, Georgetown, Lakewood, Mt. Baker, Othello, Rainier Valley, Seward Park, or anywhere else in District 2, I know you want strong public safety, affordable housing and transportation options that move us efficiently and safely.  You want parks and open space.  Keep me working for you!

In describing our district’s needs, the Seattle Times stated that I’m “the most qualified to deal with the district’s concerns.”  The Municipal League of King County and Seattle Metropolitan Elections Committee rated me highest in this race.  I’m proud to have the sole endorsement of progressive groups representing over 200,000 nurses, teachers, longshoreman, hospitality, food, and retail workers.  As a proven progressive City Councilmember for eight years, I will get things done for you!

Public Safety:  Under my leadership, we recently added 120 officers and will add an additional 100 officers by 2017.  We hired a new Police Chief and new command staff to transform the culture of SPD.  Major crimes are down -12% citywide and -25% in Southeast Seattle from a year ago, but we can do better.  We will open new community police stations closer to your home and implement new Micro-Community policing plans to better serve your neighborhood.

Transportation:  I’ve secured over $30 million in transportation improvement projects for Southeast Seattle and Rainier Valley, with another $180 million on the way.  We’re integrating roads, transit, light rail, pedestrian and bike trails by listening to you and PRIORITIZING SAFETY.

Jobs and Education:  A technology and opportunity center is on the way!  We are investing in our children—I want every child to have access to free preschool and one year of free college.  The Principals of Franklin, Cleveland and Rainier Beach High Schools have endorsed me.  Education is key; crime goes down when our youth have jobs and a career path.

Housing:  We’ll address the housing crisis by building 10,000 new units in our community—utilizing every tool to protect us from skyrocketing costs.  I’m working with Habitat for Humanity to preserve existing homes.

“RE-ELECT BRUCE!”  Mayor Ed Murray, KC-Exec. Dow Constantine, Former Exec. Ron Sims, Gary Locke, Congressman Adam Smith, Councilmember Larry Gossett, King County Labor Council, SEIU-775NW, Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Firefighters Local-27, NARAL Pro-Choice-WA, and rated “Exceptionally Well Qualified” by the KC Correction Officers Guild.  Endorsed by The Seattle Times, TheStranger, Seattle Transit Blog, and thousands more.

Statement:

Seattle is poised to be a leader among cities, but we need consistent progressive leadership to make sure that everyone gets a chance to share in the city’s success. I'm a small business owner, neighborhood planner, community activist and mother of three who wants our children to grow up and thrive in safe, vibrant neighborhoods. I’ve spent the last 15 years building healthy communities throughout District 2 from the International District to Rainier Beach. I’ve demonstrated my commitment by providing small business assistance to women and immigrant-owned businesses, increasing access to healthy food, and supporting affordable housing development.

For too long, we have let the market dictate what happens to our neighborhoods. The result is that low-wage workers are getting pushed out of our city. We need to ensure that future development aligns with our goals for creating a just, equitable and safe city.

It's hard to imagine our community thriving without solving the challenges involving public safety. This includes hiring more police officers, improving police response times and moving toward community policing.  Walking a neighborhood beat is a sure way for officers to improve relations with the community.

It's unacceptable that 240 instances of excessive force were reported by the Justice Department and not one of those officers were fired. Our current city council failed the south end with non-existent leadership on police accountability.

If our communities are going to thrive, we need to protect homeowners and renters from skyrocketing housing costs. As your city council member I’ll fight against the forces of displacement and make sure that developers don't run roughshod over our neighborhoods. I'll work to ensure growth happens equitably and balances with the character of our community.

With new city council districts, we have the opportunity for a champion for District 2. If you want a councilmember who will provide consistent, progressive leadership, I ask for your support. If you want someone who will hold regular hours in a district office and provide real leadership reducing crime and holding police accountable, then I ask for your support.  If you want real leadership on keeping housing affordable, I want to be your champion and your next councilmember.

Endorsed: Machinists Union, State Representative Zack Hudgins, State Representative Mia Gregerson, Latino PAC, National Women's Political Caucus, Sierra Club, Estela Ortega, Sharon Maeda, Frank Irigon, Pastor Marvin Charles, Rev. Monica Corsaro and many, many others. I ask for your vote.
