Statement:
Every neighborhood deserves well-maintained streets and sidewalks, open space, youth and senior programming, and high-quality police and fire protection. I’ve fought for this fairness my entire life, including my 17 years as a Legislative Aide to Councilmember Nick Licata. Before that, I worked as a community organizer – making sure City Hall was listening and being fair.
Only the top 5% of Seattle area earners have seen their wages rebound to prerecession levels. We need more policies to keep Seattle from becoming a place for only the wealthy. Policies like the ones I've worked on with others: paid sick leave for the 190,000 workers without it, the pilot version of LEAD - the award-winning pre-arrest diversion program, and regulations to ensure tenants don’t live in unsafe buildings.
I’ve worked for our community, helping make the South Park Library possible, securing replacement housing for low income High Point residents, and keeping kids safe with more school zone enforcement.
As your Councilmember I'll champion transit expansion and pedestrian safety; cut congestion from long commutes by ensuring development includes truly affordable housing, so our workforce can live here. I'll work to approve development impact fees to fund our transportation infrastructure. I'll watchdog the enforcement of our labor laws to ensure that everyone benefits and businesses have a level playing field. I’ll work for transparent, accountable policing that is fair.
Seattle PI reporter Joel Connelly said “Herbold has likely forgotten more about Council operations than some members will ever learn.” The Stranger said “Virtually anything progressive passed in our city has Lisa Herbold’s fingerprints on it… she’s encyclopedic on every policy from protecting tenants and helping the poor to serving the homeless and balancing the budget.”
I’m the only candidate in the race endorsed by King County Democrats, King County Labor Council, King County Young Democrats, The Stranger, City Attorney Pete Holmes, Councilmember Nick Licata, State Senator Pramila Jayapal, SEIU 6 and 775NW, PTE 17, Ironworkers 86, UFCW 21, American Federation of Teachers WA.
Unlike my opponent, I’m NOT funded by powerful developers, landlords and downtown business interests. They have enough power at City Hall.
I’ve lived in District 1 for 15 years. My daughter lives here with her family, and her two kids attend Sanislo Elementary. My family, including my husband Bob’s two girls, all enjoy the great parks and small businesses that flourish here.
I hope that I’ve earned your vote.
