King County Local Voters' Pamphlet
November 3, 2015 General And Special Election
City, City of Seattle
Council Position No. 9
Lorena Gonzalez
Education: Section not used by City of Seattle candidates
Occupation: Section not used by City of Seattle candidates
Statement:
Civil rights attorney and former Mayoral advisor Lorena González grew up working with her family as migrant farm workers in the Yakima Valley, earning her first paycheck as an 8 year old.
A lifelong commitment to hard work, a passion for fairness, and belief in the power of education have shaped Lorena’s progressive values and service to the people of Seattle.
As a civil rights attorney for over 10 years, Lorena represented women, older workers, low-wage workers, and people of color in police misconduct, wage theft, and gender discrimination cases. Recently, she helped implement Seattle’s historic $15 minimum wage, establish local hiring preferences, and implement police reforms.
She is past President of OneAmerica, the State’s largest immigrant and civil rights organization, served on the Seattle Police Accountability Review Panel, and on the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission.
Lorena will use her skills and experience to address the challenges facing our City.
-
The Affordability Crisis: Lorena will build a real plan to dramatically increase affordable housing options, targeting rent levels that meet the needs of our workforce, low-income families and people living paycheck-to-paycheck. She will promote density in transit rich areas to reduce commute costs, environmental impacts and other living expenses.
-
Strong & Safe Communities: Lorena will bolster public safety in our neighborhoods through investments in improved policing strategies, mental health funding, and wrap-around services for our kids to help them stay active—and out of harm’s way.
-
Addressing Social Inequities: A proven advocate for those left behind or treated unfairly, Lorena will tackle gender pay equity and the growing wage gap to ensure people from all walks of life have a shot at their dreams.
-
Investing in Transportation: Lorena knows we need transportation options that work for all: pedestrian safety, bike lanes, increased bus service, light rail expansion, and help for weary commuters.
-
Great Public Schools: Passionate for helping kids thrive, Lorena will build stronger partnerships with our schools to assure City Pre-K, after-school programs, tutors, healthcare and other services are available and funded. We MUST address the opportunity gap to have a great school district.
Lorena is supported by: The Seattle Times, The Stranger, County Executive Dow Constantine, Mayor Ed Murray, King County Democrats, Five District Democrat Organizations, King County Labor Council, Seattle Police and Fire Unions, Sierra Club, Cascade Bike, NARAL Pro-Choice WA, Equal Rights WA, OneAmerica Votes, and progressive leaders throughout Seattle.

Education: Section not used by City of Seattle candidates
Occupation: Section not used by City of Seattle candidates
Statement:
Seattle is growing, and it’s changing fast. But it’s quickly becoming a city that is great to live in only if you can afford it. I live in the Central District with my wife and two daughters who attend Seattle Public Schools. As a business consultant, and Chair of the Seattle Neighborhood Coalition and community activist with more than a decade of experience organizing and representing citizen interests at City Hall, I have the demonstrated leadership, experience and vision to address the issues before us.
Let’s Make Growth and Seattle’s Government Work for All:
-
Empower neighborhoods to define how they grow. Growth and change is something we should plan and shape together; it should not simply happen to us
-
Ensure growth is supported with superior transit, complete amenities and services, and quality neighborhood public schools that have adequate capacity
-
Ensure our police serve and protect, and bad cops are held accountable (#BlackLivesMatter!)
-
Ensure our tax money is spent wisely and fairly throughout the city
-
Make development pay its fair share, and end favoritism to special interests
-
Use City resources to build truly affordable housing, including for families and the homeless
-
Give voice to all residents and people marginalized by City bureaucracies
Experience that Matters and Courage to Stand Up for our Neighborhoods and Small Businesses:
-
Led the fight to stop a big box mall in Little Saigon, protecting 270+ small businesses at the heart of the region’s Vietnamese community
-
Defeated backroom deal to put corporate logos on our downtown skyline
-
Organized neighborhoods to force the city to properly regulate micro-housing
-
Quashed developer-giveaway that would have commercialized Magnuson Park
-
Helped mediate between human service providers and concerned citizens to bring needed social services into Seattle’s Central District
-
Helped lead the creation of Charter Amendment 19 creating District Elections for city council, and empowering citizens to obtain greater accountability
I am endorsed by State Senator Maralyn Chase, Representatives Gerry Pollet and Gael Tarleton, the 32nd, 34th, 43rd and 46th Legislative District Democrats, King County Democrats, Metropolitan Democratic Club, Green Party of Seattle, and more than one hundred community leaders, including Bob Santos, Jim Diers, Tandy Williams, Alice Woldt, David Okimoto, Yusuf Kabdi, and Norman Sigler.
It’s time to Take Back Seattle from special interests, and prioritize our families, our small businesses and our neighborhoods. I will be your voice on Council, not beholden to the Mayor, developers or downtown interests.
