Statement:

Seattle is a dynamic, diverse, fast-growing city. Yet many of our neighbors are falling behind, undermining the qualities that make Seattle an inclusive community and a great place to live.

This election is about leadership, experience and the ability to get good things done. And that’s why a broad spectrum of unions, environmentalists, transit advocates, civil rights and neighborhood leaders have endorsed my campaign. They know me and my work on your behalf.

I was lead negotiator of our Paid Sick Leave Law so workers can care for themselves and their families. I chaired the progressive Council that passed our nation-leading $15 minimum wage, and was prime sponsor of the critically important Seattle Preschool Program, approved by nearly 70% of our voters. I led the effort to fully fund the Nurse Family Partnership, a proven home visitation program the New York Times calls America’s best anti-poverty program.

In transportation, we charted a path to the largest increase in Metro transit service in our history that will ease congestion and crowded buses. I’m committed to expanding light rail to Ballard and West Seattle.

My legislation in 2013 started a process that led to comprehensive recommendations in how we provide more affordable housing, including a mandatory fee on development and mandatory provision of affordable housing. These are bold changes to increase affordability and equity citywide while targeting density near transit, light rail, and in our urban villages.

We are improving our police force through stronger accountability measures, additional and better-trained officers, and an excellent Chief of Police who shares our values. And we recently passed my gun violence tax and mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms.

I love my job and the good work I’m able to do to help make Seattle a stronger, more nurturing city. As a lifelong resident who raised my family here, I want to keep working hard for ALL our families and communities. I hope to receive your trust and your vote.

Because of my progressive record of leadership, my re-election is endorsed by Mayor Ed Murray, County Executive Dow Constantine, Seattle Fire Fighters Local 27, SEIU 775 and 1199, the King County Labor Council, Washington Conservation Voters, Cascade Bicycle Club, CASE, IFPTE Local 17, Aerospace Machinists 751, Unite HERE Local 8, Seattle Times, and neighborhood leaders across Seattle. The Municipal League awarded me their highest rating of OUTSTANDING.

Together, let’s keep building a great city.

Statement:

I’m running because I believe we could lose the gains made from raising the $15 minimum wage and paid sick leave legislation if our housing costs continue to skyrocket.

In my time as Executive Director of the Tenants Union, I doubled its operating budget, opened new offices across Seattle and the State, tripled the people served, and advanced successful campaigns to expand tenants’ rights. These campaigns included passing stronger protections for domestic violence survivors, expanding affordable housing subsidies to low income families, fighting off economic evictions, and negotiating with the rental industry to expand tenant protections in state law. I would use my position on Council to bring the needed urgency to keep Seattle affordable.

Here’s my priorities:

Accountable Policing: I’m ready to work with the new police chief to ensure all our neighborhoods are safe. At the same time, we still hear too many reports of excessive force followed by weak disciplinary action even in clear cases. We must have a police force that is accountable in cases of police brutality, and accountable to our neighborhoods. This starts with increased civilian oversight to investigate police misconduct with greater impartiality, and fully implementing the recommendations of the Community Police Commission.

Ensuring Affordable Housing: I’ll be a strong advocate for mandating that developers build more affordable housing through inclusionary zoning and require the maximum development fees so that the private sector pays its fair share for affordability. The City Council has simply been too cozy with developers at our expense. I’ll be a leader on this issue, and fight to push Olympia for local authority to limit rent hikes.

Putting People First: Seattle's new district elections are an exciting opportunity for grassroots democracy to flourish, but too many elected leaders are swayed against community interests by wealthy campaign contributions. I have pledged to not accept any campaign contribution from any big developers so voters know I stand with them.

I have lived throughout Seattle; Beacon Hill, Greenwood, Georgetown, Wedgewood, Columbia City, and currently live in the Brighton neighborhood in South Seattle. If you believe we can do more to improve policing, make housing affordable and make city government more responsive to constituents, I ask for your support and your vote.

Endorsements: The Stranger, Representative Gerry Pollet, 46th, 34th, 32nd, District Democrats, King County Young Democrats, SEIU 925, UFCW 21, UAW 4121, Transit Riders Union, Seattle Green Party, Tim Harris, Dustin Washington.
