Statement:

Education: BA - Western Washington University, JD - Seattle University School of Law

Occupation: Attorney

I’m running for Seattle City Council to be a voice for North Seattle, a place I've been proud to call my home for over 25 years. I have dedicated my life to fighting for fairness, justice, and economic opportunity, and I stepped into this race to right the wrong of the North End's underrepresentation at City Hall.

I grew up in a union household on the Puyallup Reservation, where I learned early on the value of hard work and the importance of community. As a public defender representing low-income individuals and as a King County Superior Court Judge, I committed myself to working for fairness and justice under the law.

While working as a legal and policy advisor for Governors Mike Lowry and Gary Locke, I advocated for greater economic opportunity for underserved communities. As an attorney at a major Seattle law firm and as a certified financial expert, I helped plan and build hospitals, parks, low-income housing, and community centers, all the while creating sustainable public and private sector jobs.

While my professional accomplishments are a source of pride, I am even more proud of my two daughters. I raised my family in North Seattle, where I have lived for more than twenty-five years as both a homeowner and a renter.

I will use my proven track record of effective and passionate advocacy to strengthen and invest in our community by:

  • Improving housing affordability and increasing transportation options

  • Building economic opportunity in North Seattle

  • Standing up for a just society by enhancing public safety and improving police accountability

Throughout my personal and professional life I have fought for a just society, a fair economy, and strong communities where our families can thrive. I respectfully ask for your vote. Let's build a North Seattle where we all can succeed together in life, work, and play.

I am proudly endorsed by:  King County Democrats, The Seattle Times, The Stranger, 32nd Legislative District Democrats, National Women's Political Caucus, International Association of Machinists 751, Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, Equal Rights Washington, Senator John McCoy, Senator Claudia Kauffman, Justice Faith Ireland (WA State Supreme Court – Retired), King County Councilmember Larry Gossett, Seattle City Councilmember Bruce Harrell, Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, Snoqualmie Tribe, Tulalip Tribes

Statement:

Thank you for your support in the August Primary! Having personally knocked on over 10,000 District 5 doors and holding countless conversations with D5 neighbors, I’m ready to be your advocate in City Hall.

The Seattle Area has been my home for over four decades. I’m running because I want the very best for my hometown and the people I love. I’m a UW graduate and was raised in a working class family in White Center. My Mexican-American mother graduated from college in her forties and my father spent his career as a Machinist at Boeing.  As Seattle grows and changes, our policies must show respect for diversity and hard work.

District 5 needs a coalition builder with dedication and integrity who can make government work for people. My record proves that’s what I do. I’ve co-founded the Committee to End Homelessness, reduced gun violence through last year’s successful gun background check initiative, built schools and educational programs as a school board director, and advocated for women’s rights and working families.

My record of service has earned the broadest support in this race: Mayor Ed Murray, State Senator David Frockt, 46th Democrats, WA Federation of Teachers, police, Equal Rights WA, progressive unions SEIU and UFCW, King County Labor Council, and residents across North Seattle.

Representing YOU on the City Council, I will put that experience to work:

Smarter Growth: We need more affordable housing options while preserving our unique and proud neighborhoods. We must focus growth in areas like Northgate and downtown Lake City while coordinating density with access to transit, jobs, education and services.

Improved Public Safety: We need to prevent property crimes and improve police response times. We must hire more officers and ensure they are properly trained and deployed.

Better Transportation: We must carefully oversee implementation of light rail in North Seattle while improving bus service to our neighborhoods. We need sidewalks on North Seattle arterials so we can walk safely to schools, parks and retail districts.

Targeted Neighborhood Investments: I’ll work for vital local priorities like the 130th NE public beach, responsible stormwater management in Broadview, parks in underserved NE Seattle, and a vibrant community center for Lake City.

Together we can make North Seattle a great place to live, work and play. I would be humbled to serve you, and ask for your vote.
