Vashon-Maury Island Park & Rec Dist
Commissioner Position 4
Douglas Ostrom
9618 SW Burton Drive
Vashon, WA 98070
(206) 408-7442
Four years ago I ran as an insurgent candidate to confront the disarray in the Vashon Park District. It was my first run for elective office. We’ve made progress and now I’m running for re-election to continue to make VPD stronger financially and better able to serve all island residents. I will keep working to improve parks for young and old, and both active and passive users. My experience over my past four years will be invaluable going forward.
My background and record: reduced reliance on debt to manage daily VPD business; good working relationships with other board members; 80 years of family history on Vashon; graduate of Vashon High School; outside the box thinking on the role of the Vashon Park District; environmentally engaged; familiarity with other park districts and park departments as model for Vashon Park District; Phd in economics, international work experience, and strong analytic ability.
I am running to serve Vashon and Maury Islands as a Park District Commissioner to ensure cooperation and transparency, and help expand programs with strong community input. I believe the Parks District Board must prioritize based on our collective goals and values.
A 10-year Vashon resident, I offer experience in government and corporate finance. I also have volunteered my time as vice president of the Vashon Island Soccer Club and co-chair for the Vashon Daughter Dance, and coached eleven different youth sport teams in tee-ball, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.
As a Commissioner I would contribute my expertise and passion to: Scrutinize revenues and expenses to contain levy rates, Resolve critical maintenance issues, Target community priorities for Park programs.
The Park District’s work effects every Vashon-Maury Island resident, and the Board can do a better job serving our community with more accountable leadership. Thanks for your consideration.
