Education: Bachelor's in Education, Antioch University; Masters in Education Administration, Antioch University
Occupation: Retired Program Manager for Dropout Prevention, Seattle Public Schools.

I have dedicated my life to understanding the dynamics of providing quality education to diverse groups. I am the only candidate in the race with the experience and knowledge to address the challenges of Seattle’s schools and their many diverse communities. I’m proud to have been recognized for my work by Senator Patty Murray and many others.

I have served as Seattle School Board Director for 2 terms, recently as Board President and Vice President. I consistently voted to fund programs to support our highest need students, passed resolutions to establish Ethnic Studies, a moratorium on elementary school suspensions, against excessive testing, supported preschool, improving school start times and advocated for an audit of the district budget for greater fiscal responsibility.

I have a lifelong record of proven leadership and results. I spent 32 years successfully directing educational programs that increased graduation rates and reduced gang violence.

My persistence in partnering with parents, students, staff, and diverse communities has contributed to significant improvements in our schools through higher test scores, increased graduation rates, lower truancy rates and increased family involvement.

There’s a great deal of work left to accomplish to address disproportionate discipline of students of color, opportunity gaps, preparing all of our students for promising futures, and connecting with all our communities as our district continues to grow.

I’m uniquely qualified to continue to guide the District in a positive direction. I would be honored to have your vote.

I am endorsed by: The Stranger, the Seattle Weekly, Seattle Education Association, King County Democrats, the 37th, 43rd District Democrats, Metropolitan Democrats, Local 609, King County Councilmember Larry Gossett, Community leaders Estela Ortega, Bob Hasegawa, Sharon Tomiko-Santos, Rita Green, Sebrena Burr, Kay Bullitt, Dwane Chappelle, School Board Directors Sue Peters, Leslie Harris, Rick Burke, Scott Pinkham, Jill Geary.

We need improvement now.

We can’t wait for solutions from Olympia, and our status quo isn’t working for kids. While we have dedicated teachers and principals, Seattle Public Schools has some of the worst achievement gaps in the country instead of being the kind of model, equitable and innovative school district we know that it must be. For too long, we haven’t had a functional school board that can effectively address these challenges.

Career educator and classroom teacher.

I started my career teaching students in an inner-city public school and understand the challenges that teachers face in our classrooms. Currently, I am an executive in the tech sector at a school that helps adults career change into technology jobs. Working in technology education, I see the gulf between what companies are hiring for and the limited access to STEM skills training that many of our students have. I will bring a diverse skill set from classroom teaching and tech startup knowledge that will help us prepare all of our students to compete and thrive in the Washington economy.

Study what works and do more of it.

I’ve helped grow companies and oversee operations as well as large, multi-million dollar budgets, and I know how to make tough decisions. We have an opportunity to prioritize funding to improve academic rigor for all students, and particularly for our low-income and students of color. We need strong and engaged leaders to work within our communities to tackle problems head on and explore and research real solutions to immediately help our kids.

The Seattle Times said: “Chelsea Byers … is the best candidate for school board.” I’ve also been endorsed by former School Board President Sherry Carr, current School Board Member Stephan Blanford and the King County Young Democrats. Full endorsement list at:
