Education: BA Brandeis University, History & American Studies; M.Ed. University of Massachusetts/Boston, Elementary Education
Occupation: Teacher, Labor & Community Organizer
Statement:

I was raised in the military, so I don't have one hometown. My father was from the Bronx, N.Y., and my mother was from Elko, NV. They met in the military. However, both my children were born in the Pacific Northwest. My daughter Kelly is now working on her international baccalaureate at Interlake High School, My son is attending Puesta del Sol Elementary. He was named John Bernard after Bernie Sanders. I'm a a Bernie style Democratic Socialist.

I'm an apartment dweller on the northeast side of Bellevue.I substitute taught in Bellevue for many years. Last year, I taught on an Indian reservation and am now helping them build a new school. Over the past few months, I documented labor abuses in a local warehouse, reminiscent of the 19th century, run by a major Seattle corporation. Right here in Bellevue!

I'm running on a platform of preserving Bellevue's economic and cultural diversity; bringing the southeast side into the Bellevue School District; universal preschool and childcare; affordable housing; supporting local/family businesses; a living wage; increasing outdoor play space; a cleaner environment; and preserving Bellevue's green spaces.

You can see how to achieve these goals on my website, call or e-mail me.

Statement:

Bellevue has been blessed with an economic boom, but unfortunately too many people feel left behind. Though we need to encourage those who are driving the growth at the highest end of the job market, we need to also support those who struggle to earn a family wage. While we must maintain a positive business climate to create jobs and opportunities, we must do that while putting the people of Bellevue first.

Working together and encouraging conversations in our community can help us create innovative solutions to challenges we face. That’s why I want to ensure individuals are at the center of our decision-making. I want a city that works for people.

I’ve been an Eastgate resident for more than 15 years, and dedicated my career to serving families looking for a better life. I want to continue that service at a community level and bring the voices of those too often unheard to the City Council.  I hope to represent you on the City Council, to work together to continue making our city even better.

Statement:

Bellevue deserves a champion to represent its neighborhoods. My priority is reestablishing the “Bellevue Way” – transparency, compassion, citizen involvement, and professionalism – to work for consensus on decisions that will provide a high quality of life for current and future generations.

Mobility and safety for commuters, shoppers and residents are enduring concerns. As a Board Member of the Parks & Community Services Board, the Lake Hills Neighborhood Association, and as Public Policy Committee Chair of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, I’ve seen that we’re doing good things within growing areas, but need to address traffic problems in the rest of the city, such as the congestion seen in East and South Bellevue. I’ll work for new infrastructure and technology improvements.

Homelessness is an emerging issue for Bellevue. We need a shelter plan that balances the interests of residents. As a Boardmember of LifeWire, a nonprofit helping domestic violence victims and children make safe separations and reach self-sufficiency, and The Sophia Way before that, I gained a sobering and inspiring perspective. I’ll bring that experience and seek responsible solutions to homelessness.

I ask for your vote.
