King County Fire Protection District No. 40

Proposition No. 1
Reduction of Board Size from Five to Three Commissioners

Shall the board of commissioners of King County Fire Protection District No. 40 be decreased from five members to three members?

Should this proposition be:

Approved

Rejected

King County Fire Protection District No. 40 (the District) is placing a measure on the August 5, 2025 primary ballot to reduce membership on its board of fire commissioners from five to three, as authorized under RCW 52.14.017.

Passage of this measure would reduce the number of elected fire commissioners serving on the board from five to three. If approved by a majority of voters, the reduction would occur in accordance with RCW 52.06.085. The intent behind this proposal is to improve operational efficiencies and reduce administrative costs, while preserving the board’s essential oversight functions.

We urge you to vote Yes on Proposition #1 to reduce the number of Fire Commissioners for King County Fire District 40 from five to three.

This change is a smart next step following voter approval to join the Renton Regional Fire Authority (RRFA). Now that RRFA will handle fire protection and emergency services, KCFD 40’s role is still focused on budget oversight, governance, and ensuring local accountability. Reducing the number of commissioners aligns the governance structure with the district’s streamlined responsibilities.

Fewer commissioners mean less administrative overhead, fewer elections, and with more efficient operations, resulting in long-term cost savings for taxpayers. It also reflects good government: responsive to change, fiscally responsible, and focused on delivering value to the public.

This proposition does not affect emergency response or fire service levels—those remain fully handled by RRFA. It simply modernizes how we manage the oversight role, without sacrificing transparency or effectiveness.

Join us in supporting responsible reform and lower costs. Vote Yes on Proposition #1.
