City of Snoqualmie

Proposition No. 1
Sales and Use Tax for Public Safety

Shall the City of Snoqualmie be allowed to impose a sales and use tax in the amount of one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) to provide ongoing funding for public safety purposes as permitted under RCW 82.14.450 in order to sustain current levels of service provided by the Police and Fire Departments which have been impacted by inflation?

Yes

No

The City of Snoqualmie provides public safety services, including police, fire protection, and emergency medical response services to its residents and businesses. The Snoqualmie City Council approved a Public Safety Sales Tax ballot measure to help offset inflationary pressures on City police and fire department expenses. If approved by voters, the City would impose a 0.1% sales and use tax on retail sales within the City that would be paid by all retail sales consumers, including non-resident visitors.

The funds this measure generates would be used solely to support current levels of public safety services including, but not limited to, personnel and the increased costs of hiring, training, equipping, and employing public safety professionals. If this measure is approved, the additional 0.1% sales and use tax would generate approximately $226,000 in 2025 for the City’s public safety services.

Furthermore, if this measure is approved, the City of Snoqualmie’s total sales tax rate would be 9.2%, which is currently lower than the majority of cities in King County. For every one thousand dollars in non-exempted retail sales within the City, the tax would generate one dollar.

What? The City of Snoqualmie is asking the electorate to approve an increase in the sales and use tax of one tenth of one percent (0.1%). This would increase the current sales and use tax to 9.2 percent. The funds collected will be used solely for public safety purposes, such as recruiting, training and the equipping of Snoqualmie public safety professionals.

Why? Dramatic increases in inflation over the past few years have had an adverse impact on city budgets. Amounts budgeted a year ago are no longer adequate to the job of maintaining the excellent service levels provided by Snoqualmie’s first responders, thus the need for additional funding.

It is important to note, the city has structured this tax as a tax on city wide retail sales, as opposed to an increase in property taxes, thereby spreading the burden beyond Snoqualmie residents. Additionally, even with this increase in the sales tax, Snoqualmie remains lower than the majority of King County cities.

A vote for increasing the sales and use tax is a vote to maintain the high level of services currently provided by Snoqualmie’s first responders. We urge you to vote yes.
