Due to insufficient general funds, Skykomish School District asks voters to approve this supplemental levy to enable the District to finance its maintenance and operations expenses.  This will enable the District to finance its general educational programs and goals including student assessment, facilities planning, communication to the community, maintenance and operations, and fiscal planning. Passage of this Proposition would allow the levy of property taxes over a four-year period to improve educational opportunities for all students.

The District seeks to keep this local levy to the minimum amount required to support essential school programs and building maintenance, and thus requests only half its maximum authority to be levied as follows: $289,178 for 2015 collection increasing by 2% for 2016 and 2017 and 4% in 2018. This is a decrease of the District’s requested levy amount from 2013 and 2014.

The supplemental taxes would be levied upon all taxable property within the District: $289,178 for collection in 2015; $302,191 for collection in 2016; $315,790 for collection in 2017; and $330,000 for collection in 2018. If authorized by the voters, based on current assessed valuation information, estimated levy rates per $1,000 of assessed value would be $1.75 (2015 collection), $1.79 (2016 collection), $1.83 (2017 collection), and $1.88 (2018 collection).

This Skykomish School Levy is not an additional levy; it simply replaces our expiring levy.  It does so at a lower cost to you than is currently being collected.

This Skykomish School Levy is not a frivolous levy.  This is a maintenance and operations levy which covers everything from purchasing new books and heating our building to training our teachers and staff to increasing opportunities for Skykomish students.

Levy monies collected are monies well spent.  We appreciate your past support, and have used your investments wisely.  Skykomish students benefit from up-to-date technology programs such as “Smart Boards”, and laptop computers for keyboard and research activities.  A complete new math curriculum for K-12 and a language arts curriculum for K-8 allow our students to benefit from current educational programs and methods.  The education our students continue to receive was recently recognized as the only high school where 100% of the students passed every state mandated test.  We continually update, improve, and maintain an almost 80-year old facility.  Keep our students, our school, and our money local.  Please vote yes for Skykomish School.  Please vote yes for our kids.
