Passage of Proposition No. 1 would allow Vashon Island School District to replace an existing educational programs and operation levy that will expire at the end of calendar year 2026. This replacement levy will be used to meet the educational needs of students and pay expenses of educational programs and operation that are not fully funded by the State of Washington. Further information is available on the District’s website at www.vashonsd.org.

The proposed four-year replacement educational programs and operation levy would authorize collection of up to $7,083,882 in 2027, $7,507,375 in 2028, $7,956,277 in 2029, and $8,432,113 in 2030. The levy rate required to produce these amounts is estimated to be $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value. The exact levy rates and amounts to be collected may be adjusted based upon the actual assessed value of the taxable property within the District and the limitations imposed by State law at the time of the levy.

Exemptions from taxes may be available to certain homeowners. For more information, contact the King County Department of Assessments, 206-296-3920.

Vote “yes” on Proposition 1 to renew the Educational Programs & Operations Levy. Voting “yes” ensures our schools have the resources essential to help every student succeed. Proposition 1 is a renewal of an existing levy to support our schools, not a new tax. Passing Proposition 1 is vital to VISD’s continued success and financial stability. This levy currently comprises approximately 17% of our district’s projected annual operating budget.

It is crucial that we renew the Educational Programs & Operations Levy by voting “yes” to renew the expiring levy rate of $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed property value for the next four years. Voting “yes” will ensure we fund critical positions to student success, including, but not limited to, paraeducators, nurses, and social workers. Voting “yes” also allows VISD to offer enriching classes that prepare students for the future such as: performing arts, AP classes, career training electives, extra-curricular activities, and athletics.

Although VISD receives state funding, the state’s prototypical funding model is outdated and insufficient to meet the actual costs of educating our students. A failure to pass Proposition 1 would not only put the district in a precarious financial situation but also drastically diminish the quality of the VISD education for every single student.

The Vashon-Maury Island community has long championed its support for our public schools through levies–a reflection of this island’s commitment to its students. Please continue to support our students and our island. Vote “yes” for kids!
