Asbestos-Containing Waste
Description:
Asbestos-containing waste means any material containing more than one percent (1%) asbestos, as determined using the method specified in EPA regulations Appendix E, Subpart E, 40 CFR Part 763, Section 1, Polarized Light Microscopy. Common asbestos-containing materials include: thermal system insulation, spray-applied surfacing (fireproofing, insulation, decorative), sheet vinyl flooring and associated felt backing, cement asbestos-board siding. See PSCAA's Asbestos Survey Guidance for a more complete list.
Options & Restrictions:
Removal and disposal of asbestos-containing waste is regulated by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA): read their Asbestos FAQs or select "Homeowners" or "Contractors" as applicable. A PSCAA Notification is required for friable projects involving more than 10 linear or 48 square feet. See the PSCAA list of authorized asbestos disposal facilities or the Dept. of Labor and Industries (L&I) list of certified asbestos abatement contractors. For smaller projects or projects involving nonfriable asbestos, Cedar Hills Regional Landfill requires an approved waste clearance decision. Paperwork requirements for disposal at Cedar Hills includes either a PSCAA Notification or a waste clearance decision, as well as a Waste Shipment Record.
